In the early 1990s, the RSPB approached the owner of Gigrin Farm, having witnessed the owner feeding local red kites, and requested it become the Official Red Kite Feeding Station. Nearly thirty years later, Gigrin provides what can only be described as a man-made, natural wildlife spectacle. Every day, about four hundred red kites gather and fill the skies as morsels of meat are cast on the ground, using it to top-up their morning hunting.
The challenge, photographically, is to isolate a bird from the crowd. This image, shows the striking spectacle of red kite folding its wings and stooping into a dive, reaching maximum speed before taking its ‘prey.’ Wales, UK.
