My attention was initially drawn to this scene by the sight of vultures circling and landing. On the ground, recently killed, was the carcass of a springbok being eaten by a small group of jackals. They were surrounded on all sides by a growing number of white-backed and white-hooded vultures that were awaiting their opportunity to feed. For whatever the reason, the jackals backed away whereupon there a feeding frenzy commenced as the vultures swooped. The jackal pictured, presumably regretting his decision to surrender the prize, attempted to regain the carcass and found itself being seen off by the overwhelming size, presence and powerful bite of one of the white-backed vultures. Eastern Etosha National Park. Namibia.
